Belgium has a competitive rental market. Most Kannadigas settle around Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp and Leuven — all well-connected by train. Start early and have your documents ready (payslip, ID, work contract).
One of your first steps is registering at your local commune (gemeentehuis / maison communale). Do this within 8 days of arriving. You'll need your passport, visa, lease agreement and passport photos.
Getting a Belgian SIM is easy. Prepaid SIMs need no contract — ideal when you first arrive. Once you have a Belgian bank account you can switch to a cheaper monthly subscription plan.
A Belgian bank account is essential — your employer needs it to pay your salary. Most banks ask for passport, proof of address and employment contract. Online banks like Wise are faster to set up.
Health insurance (mutualiteit / mutualité) is mandatory in Belgium. Register with a health fund as soon as possible — it reimburses a large portion of doctor visits, medicines and hospital stays.
Belgium has excellent public transport. Trains connect all major cities. In Brussels, the STIB/MIVB metro and tram cover most areas. A MOBIB card (reusable travel card) is your best friend for daily commutes.
Our dedicated volunteer committee works tirelessly to bring the Kannada community together and keep our culture alive in Belgium.
